History Of Battle Ground, WA

Battle Ground is, perhaps ironically, named after a battle that never came to be. In 1855, a group of western-expanding colonizers led by Captain William Strong came into conflict with the local Klickitat tribe. The encounter was widely expected to turn violent, but after Chief Umtuch of the Klickitat tribe was mysteriously killed, Captain Strong made the decision to withdraw and allow the tribe members time to honor their fallen chief. Local settlers mocked the Captain for this decision, calling the area “Strong’s Battle Ground” and the name stuck. Battle Ground was officially incorporated in 1951.
